Question about rpmnew, rpmsave and config files in F18.

Hello. I upgraded from F17 via yum.
I understand that rpmnew files are created when an update has a new 
config file and keeps the original config file and rpmsave I guess is 
created when the original config file is renamed and the update installs 
its new file.

But I would like to clear up about the files in /etc/pam.d

the files ending with '-ac' come from package authconfig and seems they 
are being used by default but it looks like package pam has brought 
replacements for those symlinks.
Did I understand it right? Because then I'll delete the symlinks and 
rename the rpmnew files.
