I'd recommend at least trying with Calibre's own download and see if that
works.  Also, for what it's worth, apparently, if you buy an apress book in
any format, you can then download another format.  In addition, it seems as
if their pdfs prior to 2010 were password protected. So, if these are
older, and you feel like testing, it might even be worthwhile to download
the pdfs again and see if that works.
