wayland status?

which is closed now because I guess it's acting as a changes tracker,
not a bug tracker.

There are some scattered reports of flicker at gdm/login, and I've
experienced this also.  I'm not actually sure whether these bugs are
getting attention because they haven't gotten any developer responses.

The fact this is affecting i915 graphics suggests it could be more
widespread than the lack of "me too" reports suggest. I added
drm.debug=0x06 and attached journalctl -k output to the gdm bug - this
one is based on a Mac with i915 graphics, but I had the same problem
(flickering not quite as bad) a month ago with a Dell XPS 13 which I
no longer have to test with.
