The answer to the gnome bug is that:

"The PO file seems to be ok, so you are maybe using an earlier 3.6 versión of
this package.

This string is correctly translated as "Salir" in both 3.6 and 3.8 branches, so
just updating the package should be enough."

I have everything up to date, but that translation is still in place, so what
can be done next?
