As the person responsible for using this idiom, I apologize. :)

I think you are safe to drop the word entirely.  Writer and contributor
stand-alone without any need of modification.

If any language has an equivalent, please use it.  The reason is, it
(tries) to teach/inform about the open source methodology and that
anyone can get involved, even in the smallest ways, and make a
difference.
