For a Fedora 8 system, it might be worth trying the latest 2.6.25.x-based kernel:

http://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/packages/kernel/2.6.25.4/14.fc8/

For a Fedora 9 system:

http://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/packages/kernel/2.6.25.4/39.fc9/

The two should have more or less identical firewire stacks in them.

Also, I now have a pismo powerbook in-house myself, though I need to fetch it
back from someone else in the office, so I can do some prodding there as well...
