I have a very similar problem with Fedora 9.

I have an NVIDIA MCP61 sound device, but *some* sounds come out.  I get the ping
from xterm, the sound when logging in and out, but none of the audio
applications work.  Flash on Netscape produces no sound, the default audio/video
player with Gnome doesn't produce any sound.
