It wasn't realised until the last week or so just how important that fix
was.  For this reason, it was going to be included in the next errata
kernel along with a bunch of other fixes.  When it was realised just how
important this issue was, a rush release of the last known good kernel
(2.4.20-20) plus this fix was put out.

It was. None of us realised the importance.
There's a lot more "behind the scenes" coordination between distros
than most folks realise.
