    How about a new idea?  It doesn't sound like you guys have seen that
cool project with the LCD screen...you can go headless, yet watch the
bootup sequence, then at the end, tell it to start showing status on
those cool little squares that make up letters.

    Sure, it's not LEDs, but it'll scratch that itch for the old days. 
And on the upside, it's made to fit into a 5" drive bay (like are so
prevelantly empty these days.
