How to install gnome themes?

i tried to install some icon-themes from:
http://art.gnome.org/themes/icon/index.php

using the preferences->theme-application.
it installs them, but they don't show-up in the resp. icon-submenue.

i also tried to install the svg-extra-themes, but this also didn't work.

i already had the same problems with rh9.

if someone could give me a hint, i would be very happy!
