Do you have the ability to test other install methods? Say, ftp? Not
sure that would do any difference, but then one can rule out problems
with the CD-ROM drive at least.

I have myself successfully installed FC1 on a Dell Inspiron 8000, and a
Dell Dimension 8200 using ftp-install.
