Loosing Connection To subnet

what nic and driver is in use?  I have a very similar intermittent
problems.  The nic looks like it's up and running, but it isn't sending
anything.  Tried changing cable and hub port and this didn't work. 
Tried reinstalling the driver, tried a different kernel.  Installed the
latest kernel and so far hasn't displayed this yet (since yesterday).  I
can service network restart and this usually fixes it (for a period of
time).  It drives me crazy!
