Wolfgang,
I have a Dell PE650 Server with Intel PRO/1000 MT Dual GB NIC default installed.
You could try Linux 2.4 kernel's bonding module to get double of the bandwidth .
( by setting mode=0 )
The document of bonding module is located in :
/usr/src/linux-2.4.22-1.2108.nptl/Documentation/networking/bonding.txt
