How to burn a ext3 file system on a cd?

Now, I may be talking thru my hat, having never done it, but...
couldn't you just burn that file (created by copying stuff into the 
loop-back-ed ext3 file system) directly to the CD as if it were an
ISO image? Surely cdrecord doesn't care what's in an "image file"
it burns to CD?
