Among other silliness, the network configuration also has a couple of warts:
1. With 2 NICs, I found it impossible to have only one activated at boot.
2. With 192.168.1.0 network, gateway was assumed to be 192.168.1.254.  
Bad assumption if using Linksys router.
Obviously, both fixes are trivial.
Overall, I hope some folks spend the weekend congratulating each other!
