Can't Upgrade symlinked /var

I have a RH9 system with a symlinked /var.  The Fedora install program
said that it couldn't upgrade a symlinked /var.  What are my options?  I
can't move /var back to the root partition, there isn't enough room. 

Any other options besides:

Do a clean install
Resize the root partition(This would erase the data, correct?)
