SMP Kernel::Boot Failure-hang at "booting the kernel"

Sorry to hear it, but it's nice to know it's an error that has been
duplicated.

The only thing strange about my system that I haven't mentioned so far
is that the boot partition (/boot) is on a standard partition on
/dev/sda1, while the root partition (/) is on a logical volume
(/dev/Volume00/LogVol00) that is shared between the remainder of
/dev/sda and /dev/sdb.

I would think that if this situation were an impossibility, that neither
the SMP or the non-SMP kernel would boot.

I have a vary similar config as you, lspci output follows:
