Unbootable upgrade running on VMWare

Hi,

Upgraded RH9.0 system running on VMWare and afterwards the following boot 
problem:

kmod:  failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-8, errno=2
VFS:  Cannot opên root device "sda5" or 08:05
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic:  VFS:  Unable to mount root fs on 08:05

This happens when booting from hard drive or from boot diskette.  I can 
boot 'linux rescue' with no problem.

Looks to me like scsi module is not being loaded after install.

Would appreciate any ideas to get system running.
