nss_ldap and ping not working

Spoke too soon anyhow...  After writing that message, some other 
programs started segfaulting.  I couldn't log in as any user, including 
root, on the console any more, couldn't "su", couldn't "sudo", etc. 
There certainly seems to be a problem with using ldap as an NSS source 
for the hosts database.
