Sorry to follow up my own post, got fed up with waiting for a response,
and upgraded by transferring the disc to a simpler single cpu  system to
run the upgrade. Upgraded system is fine, noticable speed improvement

However, I notice that the standard kernel installed with Fedora hangs
in exactly the same place as the install kernel, though the smp kernel
loads fine.

Is it possible that whole problem is that the default install kernel
won't boot on (some?) dual processor system(s)? Or at least the kernel
on the floppy image.
