kde probs

ok..will try another approach.. when I run kcontrol things seem fine. 
.till I try to go to Sound/Sound System.. then kcontrol crashes.. what I 
want to do it select the "run artsd when kde starts" option .. or 
whatever it's called (I'm remembering this from a previous install) .. 
when that is selected.. what does it actually do? ie - what config files 
are changed that tells kde to start artsd on startup?
