Ok, so now I understand the theory, but it doesn't bear out in practise.

I just used apt to fetch pan, and it superseded 1:0.14.2.90-0.fdr.1 with
1:0.14.2-1.rhfc1.dag.

Is 14.2 release 1 newer than 14.2.90 release 0?

Ok, so release 1.x.x is newer than release 0.x.x, but then surely
major version takes precedence over minor release.

Have I missed the point here? Is it the case that x.y is always newer than
x.y.z simply because it doesn't have the ".z"? If that's the case then the
versioning system makes no sense at all, and doesn't seem to even remotely
comply with the basic principles of arithmetic.

In fact, strike that opening remark, I think I'm more confused than ever.
