HD always churning

My HD never stops since installing severn. This doesn't happen in
windoze or SuSE, didn't happen in shrike. I don't recognize anything in
top that might cause this. All that useless activity interferes with A/V
play. The noise is annoying too. How to I find out what's doing this and
stop it?
