Synaptics touchpad on Dell Latitude CPx H500GT ?

I have a Dell Latitude CPx H500GT notebook P3 500MHz running FC 1. The 
touchpad is a big pain. I tried loading the synaptics driver and 
configuring XF86Config but when the driver loads it claims there are no 
synaptics devices found. Are there any other manufacturers touchpads 
installed in Dell CPx notebooks or a way to tell?
