Check out http://www.stalker.com and their CommuniGate Pro product. You can 
download it for free and test it. When you buy it, you can also buy 
spam-reduction and antivirus modules for it. Seems to be mature and stable, 
works with Outlook as a client via MAPI and has a web interface you can use 
in an emergency. Costs real money, but certainly less than MS Exchange.

Installation was terribly hard: "rpm -Uvh communigatepro.rpm". <smile>
