Why oh why XMMS?

Yes I did notice that a .wav file was placed in my
/home directory. I've looked at the program and all
of the options/preferences and find no place that
indicates a conversion of mp3 to wav. Is there some
command line thingy that I should use? As you can
tell I'm very new to Linux [been a DOS person since
mid 1970's].
