kernel 2.6.7-1.494 update breaks wine

I had only one response from Rodney Gordon saying he had the same issue, 
but no solutions. I am repeating my plea, in case there have been any 
developments. I have now posted my question to the linux-kernel list, 
and the wine-users list, to see if anyone there has any idea. From the 
silence, it seems as if everyone is stumped by the problem.
