It is from a Latin word. At least Miriam Webster et al. think so:

It could be viri for the plural, if it were a second declension
masculine noun. Latin already has vir->viri, so it's plural would
probably not be viri. I was stating that there was no plural for virus
in Latin--at least no plural of which we have record.
