No, /etc/fstab is only used when mounting. CD's and DVD's of all
varieties are written when not mounted. The confusion(?) over device
names comes from the /dev files. As you can see below, cdrom is a link
to hdc on my machine (and from your discovery above, yours too). Also,
notice that there are a number of devices treated this way.
