Someone is working on a "Booting from a USB Disk HOWTO" for the LDP. I 
believe the doc is very much a work-in-progress, but you can find it here:

See if that helps you. Alternately, search the public archives of the LDP's 
"discuss" mailing list for this very topic... that doc generated a bit of 
useful discussion and some pointers to additional resources.
