Problems booting on Laptop

I experienced the exact same behavior on a Sony Vaio laptop. I had been 
using FC1 on it for about a month when this behavior happened just 
yesterday. I could not get it to boot. I tried rescue mode, and was able 
to get a root shell, but I didn't know how to proceed. Since I didn't 
have anything valuable on the hd, I did a fresh install of FC1 and have 
run all of the updates.

So I don't have an answer for us, but I experienced the same hang on 
boot for the laptop. The freeze was occurring at the FireWire probe 
portion of the boot. Prior to yesterday the bootup was going just fine.
