retrieving scrolled-off kernel messages

I'm getting a kernel panic from an experimental kernel and some messages I  
want to see have scrolled off the screen.  As the system is dead at this  
point, I can't back up to see them.  Additionally, as this is a new box, there  
is no /var/log.

Is there any way to tell the boot process to "| more"?  (I know that you can't  
_really_ do that, but that's the effect I need.)
