Thanks jef, I would have figured that out in a year or two.  ;-)
That got me the compiler tools I needed, still had to install a half-dozen 
*-devel*.rpm's to provide missing libraries and such.

Finally got an install to complete without error.
Now working on connection and plugin issues.
