The most common problem is that xfs (X font server) isn't running.
Make sure it is and try again ("/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start"). Also
make sure "xfs" is enabled in run level 5:
ls -l /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/*xfs*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Jan 15 09:31
/etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S90xfs -> ../init.d/xfs
