No, these are NOT the same.

The first gives:
$ rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-source-2.4.20-8
kernel-2.4.20-8
kernel-doc-2.4.20-8

as does:
$ rpm -qa | grep kernel\*
kernel-source-2.4.20-8
kernel-2.4.20-8
kernel-doc-2.4.20-8

and this is the same result as well:
$ rpm -qa kernel\*
kernel-source-2.4.20-8
kernel-2.4.20-8
kernel-doc-2.4.20-8


but yours gives:
$ rpm -qa kernel
kernel-2.4.20-8
