IDE failures.
Looks like your disk is dying.
If it supports SMART you could smartctl -t long /dev/hdc
wait until it finishes and then smartctl -a which should tell you
for sure whether its dying.
I've had one hard disk suffer premature death and make funny noises,
and then be 'cured' by a smartctl run. I still decided to RMA it though.
You mentioned your disk is old, so it's probably outside its RMA time?
