Please select one of the many mirror sites available.  I think you will
find one that has great response times.  I have tried a couple and found
one that responds well for me.  Depending where you are on the Internet
you will find one that responds well for you.  

Hitting the default main site is always going to give you poor response
times.  It is not built for the huge load being placed on it.
