What is the output of "dmesg | grep agpgart" ?
What is the output of "grep AGP /usr/src/linux-2.6.7/.config"?
[Or wherever the config file for your kernel is.]

I don't have experience with that chip, but it looks to me like the 740
should be supported if everything is configured properly.
