use rpm to remove old kernels - for eg:

[asterix]: rpm -q kernel
kernel-2.4.22-1.2194.nptl
kernel-2.4.22-1.2197.nptl
[asterix]: rpm -e kernel-2.4.22-1.2194.nptl
