The 3.x series is very Very Old.
The 4.x series is what MySQL teach, support and document. (In fact, the doco
covers all versions and is marked up to show when various features
appeared.)

Don't go near the 3.x series if you can help it. It's stable but obsolete.
Use the MySQL.com supplied 4.x RPMs.

I've always liked the one where Foghorn Leghorn paints a face on a string mop
