problem booting compiled kernel

I have had about the same problem trying to boot a recompiled version of my native fedora core 2 kernel 2.6.5-1.358;
basically, you should make sure you have included in the kernel any tool necessary to mount ext (ext2 ou 3, I don't remember) filesystem, and swap too, but NOT AS MODULE (really built in). But I think that's what I did, and my own custom kernel still panic when trying to mount the root filesystem.
I think I also heard somewhere that kernel whith an odd number (2.5 is odd, 2.6 isn't) are prereleases while kernel whith an even number are stable releases. It could the reason why your kernel won't boot, it is bogus, but I don't remember where I heard that so maybe I just dreamed it ;).
please let me know if you succed in booting this kernel.
Sylvain
PS : I thought Fedora Core 2 was provided with 2.6 kernel, so why do you want to use the 2.5 one ?
