problem booting compiled kernel

I want to use a tool called Linux Trace Tool Kit.

it supplies patches for only 2.4.16 and 2.5.7
I tried to compile 2.4.16, but it resulted in compilation errors.
Its really painful to see that gcc's newer versions come with new rules.
Because, one has to escape a '\n' character with \ otherwise it reports error.
But thats not the case with older versions.( I use 3.3.3).

Even after making those tweaks, it's showing some errors.
Thats why I gave up 2.4.16 and took 2.5.7.
Fortunately it went nice, but hung up at boot time.
I dont know whats the reason.
I had compiled the ide drivers with kernel.
The presence or absence of initrd is not making any difference.
Its just giving the same error.


Please help me out.
