Red Hat Network Alert Icon not alerting me of updates

rhnsd and rhn-applet (the "Alert Icon") have nothing to do with each other.  Since Fedora doesn't use RHN the rhnsd service doesn't do anything.

Your issue with rhn-applet might be releated to this bug:

Try running rhn-applet-tui manually from a terminal.
