ATI 8500 3D - Take 2

The story so far:

I have an ATI 8500LE.  I tried to follow the instructions at 
http://www.fedorafaq.org/#radeon.  I kept getting errors about 
"structure has no member named `count'."  I found some other patch for 
that (http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/3298).

I also had to use a link from the drm directory under 
/lib/modules/whatever/drm to /usr/src/linux/whatever/drm.  I'm pretty 
hazy about that.

Anyway, the thing finally complies, but when I run make_install.sh I get:

    [root at bilbo fglrx]# sh make_install.sh
    - creating symlink
    - recreating module dependency list
    - trying a sample load of the kernel module
    make_install.sh: line 341:  1949 Segmentation fault      modprobe
    $module
    failed.
    [root at bilbo fglrx]#

I've removed the kernel and fglrx rpms, deleted the fglrx files, 
reinstalled the rpms, re-patched and re-compiled, and I still get the 
same thing.  (I've got to tell you that "rpm -e -nodeps kernel" seems 
like too big of a temptation to the gods of computing to cause a power 
failure!)

Anyone have any thoughts?

I feel like I'm really close, and I really want to play Vega Strike :-)
