Rescue from a floppy?

Normally, you go into the BIOS and look at the first (or occasionally,
the second) menu option. On Award BIOSes, this is marked "Standard CMOS
Settings".

There, you will see a list of hard drives the BIOS knows about. On older
BIOSes, you can use <+> and <-> to go through a list of options.
Usually, "Auto" will pick up any CD-ROMs during POST (Power-On Self
Test). The BIOS configuration screens won't show CDs.

"Auto" delays boot by searching for CD-ROMs, so I turn it off when I
don't need it.

On newer BIOSes, either the BIOS will automatically detect the drive
when you go into the configuration mode, or you press Enter and the
BIOS detects the drive automatically.

But I don't have much experience with custom BIOSes from the largest
assemblers (HP/Compaq, IBM, etc.)
