When you say you can't load it, what are you trying to load it with?  Since it is an rpm, can you just do rpm -U (for upgrade) /mnvt/cdrom/kernel.xxx.xx.rpm?

Or is that what wouldn't work the first time?

I could be totally wrong, I haven't updated my kernel via this method, so please take my advice with a grain of salt.
