Adding new fonts to OpenOffice

I found that KDE's Konqueror takes care of this really nicely

fonts:/Personal

gives you a place to drag .ttf files to... more importantly it gives a place 
where no-admin users (my daughters) can now install their own private fonts 
whenever they like.
