It seems that some OSes directly format the device without making a partition
table, such that you have to actually mount /dev/sda for example. Others
make the partition table during the partition / format process and then
you're looking at mounting /dev/sda1 for example.
No idea if that was actually the problem but I thought it worth mentioning.
