When you start your machine and the Grub screen comes up (set to the
kernel if more than one ) press the e key. This puts you in edit mode.
Use the arrow keys and place the cursor over the line to edit and press
e again. This should put you at the end of the line. Now just add the
extra info. 

If you make a mistake you will get some error. Don't panic -- hit escape
and start again.

After successful booting fix the grub.conf file and all should be ok. 
No need to run Grub
