I don't know how such a redirect would influence search engine ranking,
but using mod_rewrite would looks like:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^$
RewriteRule ^(.*) http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301]
(I hope it will survive line wrapping, above instructions are 4 lines)
